Getting Started with Invisalign®

Invisalign® is the process of straightening and adjusting teeth using clear aligner trays. It’s an extremely popular alternative to traditional metal braces because of its comfort and appearance. If you’re considering using Invisalign®, here is an overview on how to get started.

Professional Consultation

All Invisalign® treatments start with a professional consultation with a dentist or orthodontist that’s experienced with the process. He or she will evaluate you to see if your case is a good fit for the procedure. For instance, younger children are generally not candidates for Invisalign because the process of keeping track and cleaning the aligner trays can be difficult for them.

Individualized Treatment Plan

If it’s decided that Invisalign® is the right course of treatment, your Invisalign® provider will create an individualized treatment plan for you that starts with a 3D image of your teeth. Your series of aligners will be crafted from this model. Every week or as directed, you will switch to a new set of clear aligners to help your teeth slowly shift into place. Your orthodontist can give you an estimate on how long the whole process will take, though it may vary based on your actual progress. For most patients, the process takes 12 to 18 months from start to finish.

Get Invisalign® Aligners

Invisalign® aligners are made from the 3D images your orthodontist takes. When you receive your first set of aligners, your orthodontist will evaluate their fit and teach you how to take care of your aligners. This includes cleaning the trays and when to call the orthodontist for advice. Make sure to discuss with your orthodontist how to manage your aligners during mealtime and at night.

Replace Aligners Every Week

Most people will replace their Invisalign® aligners every week, though this could vary based on your unique needs. The new aligners will be only slightly different than the previous set to help your teeth slowly straighten. Many patients report that it is more comfortable to use Invisalign® than traditional metal braces. You shouldn’t feel a lot of pain while your teeth straighten.

Schedule Regular Orthodontic Appointments

Your orthodontist will expect you to schedule regular appointment during your Invisalign® treatment and for a period of time after treatment has concluded. They will want to see how the progress is going and make any necessary adjustments during treatment to ensure the best results. For most patients, orthodontic appointments are scheduled every four six weeks. However, if you have any concerns, it’s a good idea to go ahead and make an additional appointment with the orthodontist.
