What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

The key difference between the two is that orthodontists have additional training and education in tooth alignment, occlusion (bite), and facial growth, as they go on to another 2 to 3 years of schooling after dental school. In other words, orthodontists are specialists who have extensive training and experience in the use of braces, Invisalign, and other orthodontic treatments.

Every patient is unique, but braces are typically not recommended until a child has lost all of their primary teeth. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s no upper age limit for braces. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, you’re a candidate!

Some people finish treatment earlier than others, while a small number of patients take longer than two years.
